THE CHALLENGE

UK Pre-Paid SIM Card (UKPPSC) was born out of necessity. Founder Nick Brennan needed a simple way to keep data roaming costs in check when he travelled in the UK and Europe. Plus, he also wanted to avoid the problem of figuring out where to buy SIM cards overseas. Unable to find the answers he wanted, he started a company to solve the problem.

Today, UKPPSC is a prosperous business selling European phone and data SIM cards to travellers – giving them full non-roaming connectivity as soon as they land in the UK. UKPPSC approached Mash to ensure the wealth of information on its site was deployed effectively. Our audit found this wasn’t the case at all. Many content, structure and technical fixes were needed to bring things up to best practice and increase UKPPSC’s online visibility.

Crucially, selling travel SIM cards is a seasonal business. At the time UKPPSC came to Mash, we only had a few months to ensure the company’s branding and online reputation was in good shape before travellers booked their European summer holidays and started shopping for compatible SIM cards.

OUR STRATEGY

After meetings with Nick to get the full picture of UKPPSC’s business goals, Mash’s analysis revealed a lot of scope for both on- and off-page optimisation:
To increase UKPPSC’s genuine reviews in a highly competitive sector, Mash improved the company’s participation on Google My Business as well as third-party sites.
To capitalise on the allied information needs of site visitors, Mash conducted an on-site content review and implemented a blog content strategy to fill the site with original, high-quality information – such as original Lonely Planet-style country guides – to appeal to travellers likely to purchase cards.
To resolve some of the technical issues, Mash built UKPPSC a new sitemap, fixed pages that returned the 404 error code and implemented canonical tags.
To improve user experience, Mash optimised the site structure and navigation.

THE RESULTS

Quickly rolling out all of Mash Media’s recommendations, resulted in UKPPSC witnessing dramatic improvements within just 3 months. The changes not only brought increases in traffic but also increased the quality of traffic. So while users went up by nearly 160%, these new users led to a conversion boom of 710%!

It is a clear sign that pent-up market demand was there, it just hadn’t been quite connecting to UKPPSC’s offering.
